Lessons learned as a Co-Founder

When it comes to deciding if you want to be a sole founder or Co-Founder there is no right or wrong answer. However, if you decide to start a business partnership, here are some useful things I have learned (and am still learning!) after being a Co-Founder for 2 years:

1. Have a shared long-term vision for the company. It’s ok if your partner’s motives, personal circumstances and experience differ from yours. In fact, that is inevitable. What is important is that you are on the same wavelength regarding your vision for what the company will look like in 3, 5, 10+ years.2. Each founder has their own unique strengths and weaknesses. This is why often times many successful business partnerships consist of each Co-Founder having a different role in the company that they excel at and which plays to their strengths and experience. As a founder it is often easy to try to do everything at once, but having specific responsibilities will not only increase efficiency, but allow you to grow and develop specific skillsets.3. Don’t shy away from facing disagreements head on. The earlier you iron out disagreements, the better; do not allow them to fester. This is key to maintaining a healthy relationship.4. Never forget: As a Co-founder you share the same goal as your partner; the ultimate success of your company. Give praise when your partner is doing things right, provide constructive criticism if you think they can improve. You share the same goal and have similar aspirations; help each other to grow.Would be keen to hear any other tips from people with experience in business partnerships/who are considering starting a partnership!
